Leipzig win German Cup final on penalties

Christopher Nkunku of RB Leipzig lifts the DFB-Pokal trophy after their sides victory during the final match of the DFB Cup 2022 between SC Freiburg and RB Leipzig at Olympiastadion on May 21, 2022 in Berlin, Germany.

RB Leipzig have defeated Freiburg 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the German Cup final to lift their first major trophy.

Ten-man Leipzig, beaten finalists in 2019 and 2021, prevailed over a Freiburg side who had never previously been in a major Cup final.

Freiburg captain Christian Gunter and Ermedin Demirovic missed in the shootout.

Maximilian Eggestein put Freiburg ahead on 19 minutes with the officials deeming a handball in the build-up to be accidental.

Leipzig lost Marcel Halstenberg to a red card in the second half but Christopher Nkunku then equalised on 76 minutes.

Coach Domenico Tedesco has re-energised Leipzig since taking over in December and the first major trophy for the Red-Bull backed club follows qualification for the Champions League after finishing fourth in the Bundesliga.

Freiburg, sixth in the Bundesliga, are heading to the Europa League.
