Dele Alli dropped from Spurs squad for Carabao Cup clash against Burnley

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has been left out of the club’s squad for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup fourth round tie against Burnley, raising fresh questions over his future.

Having seemingly worked his way back into contention after being frozen out last season, Dele has been dropped from the starting lineup in the Premier League since a heavy north London derby defeat to Arsenal last month.

The 25-year-old has remained involved in Europe, where manager Nuno Espirito Santo has rotated his usual starters, but was part of the sorry side that lost 1-0 to Vitesse Arnhem last week.

Dele had previously started for Spurs in the Carabao Cup third round against Wolves and would have been expected to at least keep his place in that competition this week.

Yet the Daily Mail has reported that he is expected to be omitted from the squad against Burnley, even though he is available and Nuno has stressed the importance of winning the game.

Dele still has just under three years left on his Spurs contract, though he was heavily linked with a move away last season to kickstart his career. He wanted to leave the club last January in a late bid to get back into England contention ahead of Euro 2020 and was furious and frustrated that Spurs were unable to agree a proposed loan deal for him to join Paris Saint-Germain.

Falling out favour with Nuno now, having played 90 minutes in the opening five Premier League games of the season, will only bring fresh questions about whether he has a future at the club.

Dele was hooked at half-time against Arsenal and has only been an unused substitute for subsequent league matches against Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham.
