Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier acknowledged after Wednesday’s loss at Manchester United that the team’s post-season tour in Australia is “not ideal” preparation for the upcoming Euro 2024 with the England national side.
Trippier sounded concerned about the tight schedule, which leaves limited time for rest and recovery before England’s international fixtures.
Following their final Premier League match against Brentford on Sunday, Newcastle will fly to Australia for two friendly matches. They face Tottenham Hotspur at the Melbourne Cricket Ground next Wednesday and an A-League All-Star team at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium two days later.
The trip was obviously organized to boost Newcastle’s brand and commercial revenue in an effort to aid the financials of the club so transfers cam be completed throught the summer transfer window. This tour, however, poses a challenge for players involved in Euro 2024.
Trippier highlighted the issue, stating, “It’s not ideal because it’s a tournament year. I’ve done it at Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, but in a (international) tournament year, it’s not ideal. We’re players, we’ve got to do what’s right for the club. When we’re there, it’ll be good, we’ll embrace it and experience it.”
Despite the logistical difficulties, Trippier emphasized the importance of supporting the club’s objectives, understading the reasons behind such a trip.
“It’s one of those where you just have to get on with it. It’s not like it’s Benidorm round the corner, it’s 25 hours away. There’s no excuses, I understand why the club are doing it and we’ve just got to get on with it,” Trippier said.
Trippier also addressed concerns about his fitness for the Euro 2024, removing any question mark people might have about his availability, fitness, and readiness for the tourney if he gets a call to participat in it.
“I’m good. The medical team at England is always in contact with Newcastle’s team, not just about me, but other players as well,” Trippier said. “I’m fit. England knows that.”
England’s head coach, Gareth Southgate, will announce the preliminary squad for Euro 2024 on May 21. England’s campaign begins on June 16 against Serbia, with friendly matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 3 and Iceland on June 7.
