Hansi Flick to become Barcelona coach if Xavi leaves

Sports director of the German Football Federation (DFB) Hansi Flick addresses the media during a press conference in Frankfurt am Main, western Germany, on December 16, 2014. The DFB aims to organise the UEFA European Football Championship in the year 2024.

For months, speculation about the FC Barcelona head coach position persisted. Then came the news that it was indeed Xavi Hernandez who retained the faith of the higher-ups at the club. However, yet again there came confusion, and the coach’s position at Barcelona is no longer a guarantee.

That, consequently, made many ask about the possible alternatives that could arrive. Several names from Germany seemed to be in the loop, as well as some from Italy, England, and other places as well. Even names from within FC Barcelona itself seemed to be gaining some level of trust to take over in case Xavi left.

However, the most outstanding candidate then is now more or less confirmed as the number one priority. According to the ever-reliable Italian journalist, Fabrizio Romano, German coach Hansi Flick has given his utmost priority to his objective of becoming the new FC Barcelona coach in case Xavi Hernandez ends up leaving.

As per Romano, the former Bayern Munich and German National team coach has been giving priority to the Barcelona position for several months now. Reports from other sources even have gone on to claim that the sextuple-winning coach from Bayern’s historic season has even been learning Spanish to better adapt to the Catalan club and be ready for its requirements.

Moreover, the Italian journalist claims that Barcelona are pushing for contacts with the 59-year-old coach, and the coach has been patiently waiting for his time and for the perfect opportunity with the Blaugrana club. In fact, Romano states he even had no talks with Premier League side Chelsea as a result of this.

Previously, reports suggested that the London-based club, who are also without a coach for the future, would want to sign him to become their manager. However, it seems that Flick is already more focused on getting his ideal position at FC Barcelona.

For Barça president Joan Laporta, Romano confirms that Hansi Flick is the number one candidate. Furthermore, more and more contacts have since taken place as it seems that the Barcelona board truly values the patience from Flick and deem him to be a solid option to lead the squad for the near future.
