Rangers retain Sky Sports Cup with win over Partick Thistle

Rangers head coach Jo Potter with the Sky Sports Cup trophy during the Sky Sports Cup Final match between Partick Thistle and Rangers at Tynecastle Park, on March 24, 2024, in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Jo Potter's side ran out 4-1 winners at a sunkissed Tynecastle this afternoon, as they remain the champions of the competition.

Rangers went into the game as heavy favourites against Brian Graham's part-time side.

And thanks to goals from Mia McAulay, Rachel Rowe, Rio Hardy and Olivia McLoughlin, the Ibrox side got their hands on the trophy for the second successive year, as they look to end the season strongly, with a potential treble on the cards.

McAulay had Rangers in the lead early doors before a quickfire equaliser by Rachel Donaldson for Thistle. It was a stunning strike and arguably the pick of the bunch on the day.

Attentions now turn back to SWPL action, with Rangers sitting top of the table and gunning for the title having lost out dramatically to Glasgow City last season. Both City and Celtic are hot on their coattails, just one point behind.

Thistle sits bottom of the top six split in the SWPL as things stand, but will take great confidence from their run in the cup, putting up a fight against one of the country's top teams.

Meanwhile, Kenny Miller has named his choice for Premiership Player of the Year for the 2023/24 campaign.

The former Rangers striker believes that both Jack Butland and James Tavernier must be in the running for the award.

The ex-Scotland international is also of the belief that Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley should be in consideration given his strong form in the first half of the season.

However, it's Hearts forward Lawrence Shankland who gets his vote for the gong, with the pundit opting not to go for a player from one of the Old Firm in a surprise move.

He wrote in the Sunday Mail: "Rangers have two outstanding candidates for Player of the Year, in my opinion. Jack Butland in goal has been nothing short of phenomenal. And he’s joined by James Tavernier who continues to defy logic with his numbers."
