Newcastle 1-2 West Ham first-half player ratings: Anthony Gordon excels but other stars struggle

Vladimir Coufal of West Ham United clashes with Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and West Ham United at St. James Park on March 30, 2024 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Newcastle United are behind at the break despite being handed a dream start against West Ham at St James' Park.

Just three minutes had gone when Anthony Gordon won a spot-kick before Alexander Isak duly converted at the Leazes End. But the game drifted away from Newcastle as Michail Antonio sprinted through and levelled the game up.

And Newcastle have also lost another player to an injury after Jamaal Lascelles went off with a knock after just 16 minutes. West Ham rubbed salt into the wounds on the stroke of half-time as Mo Kudus was afforded time and space to sweep home a second. Newcastle felt the game should have been stopped with Schar down injured in the build-up but the goal stood.
Martin Dubravka 6

Left to deal with Antonio after defence switched off. A couple of other good claims.

Tino Livramento 7

Handed his opportunity at right-back. Put in a wonderful challenge to deny Bowen which had the crowd on their feet.

Jamaal Lascelles 6
Hit by injury hammer blow in opening stages.

Fabian Schar 5

Half-hearted attempt to get back as Antonio equalised.

Dan Burn 6
Switched from left-back into the centre and has assumed the captaincy. Probably in a position he's more comfortable with now.

Sean Longstaff 6

Willing to get a foot in.

Bruno Guimaraes 6
Nothing has come off for him so far. Including a stinging shot that cracked the post.

Joe Willock 5

Yet to really arrive into this game.

Jacob Murphy 5
Not much impact.

Anthony Gordon 8

A lively start as he won the penalty to put Newcastle ahead. Has easily been United's best player with four shots so far.

Alexander Isak 7
Made no mistake with an ice cool penalty. Blasted another chance over before West Ham got back into the game.
Subs

Emil Krafth 6 (for Lascelles 16)

Was chasing shadows as the equaliser went in.
