Thomas Tuchel to leave Bayern Munich – but 'will stay put until the summer'

Head coach Thomas Tuchel of FC Bayern München looks on ahead of the Bundesliga match between VfL Bochum 1848 and FC Bayern München at Vonovia Ruhrstadion on February 18, 2024 in Bochum, Germany.

Thomas Tuchel and Bayern Munich have decided to part ways at the end of the 2023/24 season.

It follows a dreadful run of form for Bayern as they suffered three straight defeats in crucial games. Tuchel's side have seen their hopes of defending their Bundesliga crown crumble in recent weeks after humiliating losses to title rivals Bayer Leverkusen and mid-table Vfl Bochum.

They are also on the cusp of an early Champions League exit following a 1-0 defeat to Lazio in last Wednesday's last-16 clash away from home. Bild report the Bayern hierarchy now think it's time for a change in the dugout just a year after the German's appointment.

The report claims Bayern decided to end their partnership with Tuchel following intense discussions in recent days. They identified several problems both on and off the pitch, with fans and players alike growing disgruntled with the situation at the Allianz.

However, the club want to end the season with Tuchel at the helm. They believe the players, who have been put under the microscope by veteran Thomas Muller for lacking "balls" in matches, should be held responsible for this season's shortcomings and not be given a free pass with an immediate change in head coach.

As it stands, Bayern trail Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen by a staggering eight points, putting their hopes of a 12th consecutive title in serious danger. Tuchel could leave in the summer having not won a trophy this season - an unforgiveable sin in Bavaria.
