Xavi says Barça should renew Sergi Roberto: ‘He knows what Barça is’

Barcelona boss Xavi Hernández thinks the club should keep captain Sergi Roberto around for one more season. Roberto’s deal expires in six months and he’s widely expected to leave in the summer, but the coach doesn’t want to see him go.

Speaking to the press on Saturday, Xavi said he has recommended Roberto’s renewal to the club and praised the captain’s leadership and qualities as a player. He also defended Roberto, who is a target of much criticism from press and fans.

“I would recommend to the club that they renew Sergi Roberto. They already know it. He is important, he can play in many positions. You have to explain very little to him. He knows what Barça is, what it represents. A highly criticized footballer, but he always plays at a high level. I’m delighted with him.”

Roberto has divided opinion among Barça fans for most of the last decade, but no one can argue about his love for the club and his willingness to play whatever role necessary to help the team.

He’s also a beloved teammate and somehow always seems to find his way back in the team for big games, and with Barça’s awful financial situation it would be very hard to find a player in the market as good as Roberto who’s willing to be paid as little money as the captain is.
