Former Inter President Massimo Moratti explains why ‘it just didn’t work’ anymore for Jose Mourinho at Roma and why it is ‘a difficult task’ for Daniele De Rossi to take over.
The news was announced this morning and shocked the football world, as the Friedkin family who own the club decided to fire The Special One, even though his contract was due to expire at the end of the season anyway.
The tension had been growing within the club, especially with the departure of director of sport Tiago Pinto, who decided to walk away once the January transfer window has closed.
“I am very sad to hear that Mourinho has been sacked, because I know his professionalism and how much he cared. It must’ve been a huge disappointment for him,” former Inter President Moratti told LaPresse news agency.
“There were several factors that came together and meant it just didn’t work: the balance of the team, a few players performed much worse than expected, and there were numerous injuries.”
Moratti was the chief of Inter when Mourinho won the Treble in 2010 and remained close to the Portuguese tactician.
Now Roma have appointed former Roma captain De Rossi, who spent almost his entire career with the Giallorossi, leaving only for the final months before retirement for a bucket list experience at Boca Juniors.
“He has a difficult task, because it is never easy following Mourinho, but he is already at home there and the choice was made with that in mind. It was an intelligent pick from Roma.”
