Deco talks Xavi’s future after Barca’s Super Cup defeat

Xavi, Head Coach of FC Barcelona, looks on with his runners-up medal after the team's defeat in the Super Copa de España Final match between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona on January 14, 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Barcelona sporting director Deco says Xavi still has the full backing of the board after Sunday’s embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup.

Xavi apologised to supporters after seeing his side beaten easily by their bitter rivals in Saudi Arabia.

Deco spoke after the defeat and insists Xavi’s future is not up for discussion right now.

“It’s a tough defeat. Furthermore we have not been able to fight. We have to continue and think about the Cup,” he told Movistar.

“This question [about Xavi] doesn’t make any sense. The coach continues to have everyone’s trust. It is a defeat that does not change anything in that aspect.”

Yet there’s no doubt that Xavi will be feeling the pressure after a poor performance and a really disappointing showing from his players.

Barca have now lost twice Madrid already this season and sit seven points behind Carlo Ancelotti’s side in La Liga.
