Zapata double helps Torino beat misfiring Atalanta

Duvan Zapata of Torino FC scores first goal evades challenge from Giorgio Scalvini of Atalanta BC during the Serie A TIM match between Torino FC and Atalanta BC at Stadio Olimpico di Torino on December 4, 2023 in Turin, Italy.

Two goals from Colombia forward Duvan Zapata have helped Torino into the top half of the Serie A table courtesy of a 3-0 win over Atalanta.

Atalanta, winless in their last four games, won on their last four visits to Turin's Olympic stadium, but the home side took the lead midway through the first half and never looked likely to relinquish it.

Zapata reacted quickest to a low cross from the left and, with the visitors' defence static, he had time to twist and fire in a low shot.

Antonio Sanabria doubled Torino's lead 10 minutes into the second half when he converted a penalty awarded after Alessandro Buongiorno was fouled.

Zapata got his second, and Torino's third, five minutes into added time with a powerful shot from just inside the penalty box.

The game will give Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini nightmares after his lacklustre attack misfired again. They have managed to score just five goals in their last six games in all competitions.
