Toothless Napoli draw with Monza, Inter held to draw

Juan Jesus of SSC Napoli and Lorenzo Colombo of AC Monza compete for the ball during the serie A Tim match between SSC Napoli and AC Monza at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on December 29, 2023 in Naples, Italy.

Napoli have failed to score for the fifth time in their last seven games as the defending Serie A champions laboured at home to a goalless draw with Monza, while leaders Inter Milan were held to a draw.

Matteo Pessina missed a penalty for Monza midway through the second half and teammate Mirko Maric was sent off in stoppage time for kicking the ball away. Both coaches also received red cards in a chaotic last few minutes.

Monza's lack of goals is a problem for a club already punching above their weight.

They have performed admirably in their one and a half seasons in the top tier but Friday's game was the first time in their Serie A history that they failed to find the net in three consecutive matches. Monza remain in 11th after the draw.

Napoli's barren run, meanwhile, means they have scored just 28 points from a possible 54. They are in seventh place.

Goals were not much easier to come by in Florence but a late header from defender Lucas Ranieri - his first of the league season - earned a 1-0 win against Torino.

The win extended Fiorentina's unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions and lifted them to fourth in Serie A. Torino remained 10th.

Leaders Inter Milan extended their lead in Serie A even after blowing a lead in a 1-1 draw at Genoa.

Marko Arnautovic put Inter ahead three minutes before half-time but Radu Dragusin equalised for the home side seconds before the break when he headed home from a corner.

The result put Inter five points clear of Juventus, who enjoy a game in hand.

In Rome, Lazio scored two goals in three minutes to come from behind and beat Frosinone.
Matias Soule put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot 13 minutes into the second half but Gustav Isaksen and Valentin Castellanos worked in tandem to turn the match.

Castellanos scored from Isaksen's assist after 70 minutes and two minutes later the roles were reversed.

Patric scored a third for Lazio with six minutes left to lift Jose Mourinho's men into eighth place, just a point behind Napoli. Frosinone remained 14th.
