Girona go top of La Liga after victory over Alaves

Artem Dovbyk of Girona FC celebrates with teammates after scoring their team's third goal with a penalty kick during the LaLiga EA Sports match between Girona FC and Deportivo Alaves at Montilivi Stadium on December 18, 2023 in Girona, Spain.

Girona are perched at the head of the La Liga table after a convincing 3-0 home victory over 13th-place Alaves.

The Catalonians are now two points ahead of Spanish giants Real Madrid and a whopping nine points ahead of current La Liga champions Barcelona, whom they defeated 4-2 at the Nou Camp last weekend.

This is all part of an incredible run of form for Girona who have now gone 11 games without a loss, a loss that came against their closest title challengers Madrid at home at the end of September.

The surprise title contenders took the lead midway through the first half thanks to Artem Dovbyk who was on hand to head home a ball parried into his path from keeper Antonio Sivera. Portu’s low-drilled shot found the corner of the net just before the break to extend his side’s advantage.

Ukrainian Dovbyk scored his 10th goal in 16 games from the spot after the hour mark to tie things up. Only Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham has scored more this season in La Liga.
