Cagliari leave it late in Serie A as Lecce draw again

Lameck Banda of US Lecce celebrates after scoring a goal during the Serie A TIM match between Empoli FC and US Lecce at Stadio Carlo Castellani on December 11, 2023 in Empoli, Italy.

Lecce's winless run goes on in Serie A, after the visitors drew 1-1 at Empoli to make it 10 games without a league victory.

Empoli sit third from bottom - level on points with 17th-placed Udinese - while Cagliari scored twice in added time to beat visiting Sassuolo 2-1 and leapfrog out of the relegation places into 16th.

Monday's stalemate was a fourth draw in a row for Lecce, who remain 13th, five points clear of the relegation places.

Lecce took the lead in the 64th minute thanks to a clanger from goalkeeper Etrit Berisha.

Zambian winger Lameck Banda tried his luck from long distance, and although the shot appeared to pose little danger it bounced between Berisha's legs.

Empoli struck back seven minutes later with an equally fortunate goal, defender Hamza Rafia sticking out a leg to stop a cross from the right and deflecting the ball over his own keeper.

In Cagliari, Sassuolo scored after seven minutes thanks to a Martin Erlic header and were managing well even after a red card for defender Ruan Tressoldi 17 minutes into the second half.

But added time proved action-packed.

Seconds after Sassuolo had a second goal ruled out for offside, Gianluca Lapadula equalised for the hosts.

Then, with almost the last kick of the game, Leonardo Pavoletti scored from an overhead kick to put Cagliari ahead and give the Sardinian side only their third win of the season.
