Ranieri frustrated at Cagliari errors with Juventus

Jakub Jankto of Cagliari Calcio (C) battle for the ball with Filip Kostic of Juventus as Claudio Ranieri, Head Coach of Cagliari Calcio, looks on from the touchline during the Serie A TIM match between Juventus and Cagliari Calcio at on November 11, 2023 in Turin, Italy.

Cagliari coach Claudio Ranieri was frustrated by the 2-1 defeat to Juventus, particularly the opening goal. ‘We worked all week on set play situations and they scored precisely the way we expected.’

The Bianconeri managed to find a way through from a couple of Filip Kostic corners, the first nodded in by Gleison Bremer with a looping header, then 10 minutes later Daniele Rugani bundled it over the line with his chest from point-blank range.

It was a tense finale, as Alberto Dossena rose to meet a corner of his own and then had the potential equaliser fingertipped onto the upright by Wojciech Szczesny.

“There is bitterness over the opening 15 minutes, when we did not do enough, while we worked all week on set play situations and then Juve scored two goals in precisely the way we expected,” Ranieri told DAZN.

“It is disappointing that we were so open for them, we were naïve then. We scored with a header, but there was a defender that had to be beaten in the air. Bremer had nobody within two metres of him and that is unacceptable against a team that is famous for being good on set plays.

“I told my players, I felt bad for reproaching them, as we managed to neutralise most of their counter-attacks and played well, but ultimately we lost. We lost because it is the details that make the difference.

“We knew what we had to do, but were too slow to do it and Juve made the most of that.”

At least Ranieri has more choice from the bench now, able to use Gianluca Lapadula, Leonardo Pavoletti and Andrea Petagna today.

“I have many players who are slowly getting into shape and that is reassuring for the future.”

The Sardinians have been improving a great deal lately and came into the game off three consecutive victories between Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

They were also able to end 615 minutes of Serie A football without Juve conceding a goal.
