Andrew Robertson to return to Liverpool after shoulder injury

Scotland international Andrew Robertson is set to return to Liverpool after he sustained an injury in Thursday's 2-0 defeat to Spain.

After winning their opening five Euro 2024 qualifying games, Scotland knew that a point in their away meeting with Spain would secure their place at next summer's tournament.

Scotland's hopes of a positive result were dealt a blow in the 44th minute when their captain was forced off due to an injury issue.

Despite receiving a setback, Scotland thought they had taken the lead through Scott McTominay, who whipped a free-kick in at the far-post from a tight angle.

However, the goal was ultimately ruled out for an offside infringement and it proved to be a pivotal moment, as Spain netted two goals in the final 20 minutes to claim maximum points.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has revealed that Robertson will immediately return to Liverpool to undergo assessment.

"Andy has hurt his shoulder," Clarke told reporters after the defeat in Seville. "He will go back to his club now."

As a result, the left-back will be unavailable for Tuesday's trip to France for a friendly encounter against the 2022 World Cup finalists.

The defender left the pitch with his right arm in a makeshift sling after he appeared to sustain a shoulder injury in a collision with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon.

Robertson, who was making his 67th international appearance, was subsequently replaced by Everton full-back Nathan Patterson.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be left waiting to establish the extent of the shoulder injury to one of his key players.

Robertson has played every minute of Liverpool's Premier League campaign, helping the club pick up 17 points from their eight matches.

The 29-year-old is now an injury doubt for the Merseyside derby against Everton, which takes place at Anfield on October 21.

If Robertson is unable to feature, Greece international Kostas Tsimikas could be brought into the side to make his first Premier League start of the season.
