Embattled Juventus are on top of Serie A for the first time in more than three years.
Substitute Andrea Cambiaso scored seven minutes into stoppage time to earn the 36-time Italian champions a 1-0 win over Hellas Verona in Turin on Saturday.
Juventus, who won nine straight titles between 2012 and 2020, were most recently top of the pile on August 1, 2020 - 1183 days and nearly 125 matches ago.
"These are three important points that add continuity after the game in Milan," Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said, referring to his side's 1-0 win at AC Milan last weekend.
Their joy could be short-lived, though, with both Milan clubs having the chance to move back ahead of the 'Old Lady' on Sunday.
Inter - one point behind Juventus - host Roma, while AC Milan, who are two points back, visits defending champions Napoli.
Juventus were penalised 10 points for false accounting last season and have had midfielders Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba banned for betting and doping respectively this season.
The club were also banned by Europe's governing body UEFA from the Conference League this season due to the false accounting scandal.
Seventh-place Bologna drew 1-1 at Sassuolo in a regional derby as Joshua Zirkzee and Daniel Boloca traded goals.
Bologna have drawn all five of their away matches.
Torino won 1-0 at Lecce with a first-half goal from Alessandro Buongiorno as goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic pulled off six saves on his way to a fifth clean sheet of the season.
Having dominated throughout, Juventus finally found the target when Cambiaso knocked the ball in from close range after an effort from Arkadiusz Milik came back off the post.
