United inching closer to signing Andre Onana

André Onana of FC Internazionale during the FC Internazionale training session at the club's training ground Suning Training Center at Appiano Gentile on July 13, 2023 in Como, Italy.

Onana reported at Inter’s Suning Training Center on Thursday for the first day of pre-season but United are hopeful he will be involved on their tour of the United States.

United and Inter have a productive relationship, having negotiated deals for Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Young and Alexis Sanchez in the last four years with the assistance of intermediaries.

Should United complete the signing of Onana then Dean Henderson is expected to be granted permission to join Nottingham Forest permanently.

With De Gea already gone, the additional departure of Henderson would save around £390,000 in wages, which would more than cover Onana’s salary. Henderson’s salary has increased to £110,000-a-week as United qualified for the Champions League.

United have maintained Henderson is an option to replace De Gea as No.1 but that is believed to be face-saving to maintain his resale value.

Everton are also interested in signing Anthony Elanga after they failed with a loan offer on transfer deadline day in January.

Henderson and Elanga could bring in around £40m to reinvest in incomings. United have already parted with £55m to sign Mason Mount.

If United bank fees for Henderson and Elanga, they would have funds to negotiate closer to Atalanta’s asking price for striker Rasmus Hojlund.

Hojlund, 20, has already spoken to Ten Hag but Eintracht Frankfurt figurehead Randal Kolo Muani is considered an alternative option.
