After dramatically winning the Bundesliga title on the final matchday of the season, Bayern Munich made some drastic changes at the club. Despite winning the league, Die Roten endured a difficult campaign in terms of finding consistency in performances.
The Bavarian club parted ways with Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic. Kahn didn’t travel with the squad to Cologne to celebrate the league title since he didn’t take his exit kindly. Meanwhile, Salihamidzic’s departure was on amicable terms. Bayern appointed Jan-Christian Dressen as the replacement for Kahn.
Die Roten is yet to appoint a new sporting director. Thomas Tuchel currently has a big say in summer transfers. According to SportBild, Tuchel is probably the first coach at Bayern that has a big say in transfer decisions. There is no rush to appoint a sporting director at the club as of now.
Tuchel’s predecessors didn’t receive complete backing from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness at the same time, which made sure that these coaches didn’t have a bigger say in squad planning. SportBild reveals that Tuchel is admired by Rummenigge and Hoeness, strengthening the German coach’s position at the club.
The transfer decisions made by Bayern in the last month highlight the growing influence of Tuchel. The Bavarian club completed the signing of Raphael Guerreiro last week. The Portuguese full-back has worked with Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund. The German coach reportedly pushed for Guerreiro’s signing after the departure of Joao Cancelo.
Tuchel is also playing a key role in Die Roten’s pursuit of Harry Kane. SportBild reveals that Tuchel has pushed for Kane’s signing. The German coach also held productive talks with the English striker. Kane has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Bavarian club. It remains to be seen if Die Roten will find a way to convince Spurs to sell Kane.
The former Chelsea manager also wanted Declan Rice at Bayern. Thomas Tuchel reportedly wanted to sign Rice at Chelsea. However, the English midfielder prefers staying in the Premier League. Rice is expected to complete a move to Arsenal in the coming days.
The growing influence of Thomas Tuchel can be a boon as well as a bane for Bayern. It will largely depend on how the summer signings will fare under Tuchel. The German coach will have to deliver on the pitch across all competitions to repay the big faith shown by the club. Tuchel will have to Die Roten successful in the Champions League to keep hold of these powers.
