Juventus win turns Champions League fight into four-horse race

Juventus’ win and Atalanta’s defeat has had an important ramifications on the top four race, essentially leaving four teams fighting for three Champions League qualification spots.

The Bianconeri secured a key 2-0 win away to la Dea on Sunday, with goals from Samuel Iling-Junior and Dusan Vlahovic being enough to snatch all three points in a tense and heated affair, which also saw the Serbian striker suffer racial abuse from a large number of fans at the Gewiss Stadium.

Milan and Inter also won their Serie A outings this weekend, beating Lazio and Roma respectively, keeping things interesting at the top of the league table.

With four games left to go, just five points separate second place Juventus from fifth place Milan. Atalanta’s defeat leaves them on 58 points, three behind the Rossoneri and five behind Inter, making it almost impossible for them to break into the Champions League spots.

Things could get more complicated, depending on Juventus’ off-pitch legal issues. Their 15-point deduction was temporarily suspended pending a new trial, which could be delayed until next season.

Three of the four teams are also involved in European competitions, with Juventus competing in the Europa League and the two Milanese clubs facing each other in the Champions League. Inter will also play the Coppa Italia final against Fiorentina on May 24.

Juventus’ last four Serie A games: Cremonese (May 14), Empoli (May 22), Milan (May 28), Udinese (June 4).

Lazio’s last four Serie A games: Lecce (May 12), Udinese (May 21), Cremonese (May 28), Empoli (June 4).

Inter’s last four Serie A games: Sassuolo (May 13), Napoli (May 21), Atalanta (May 28), Torino (June 4).

Milan’s last four Serie A games: Spezia (May 13), Sampdoria (May 20), Juventus (May 28), Hellas Verona (June 4).
