Chelsea have confirmed that Thiago Silva has suffered damage to his knee ligaments following the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Silva, 38, was forced off during Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League loss to their London rivals in the first half and underwent a scan to assess the extent of his injury on Monday.
The west London club have not yet given any indication as to how long Silva faces on the sidelines with games against Leeds and Borussia Dortmund coming up.
They said in a statement: “Having sustained a knee injury during the first half of Sunday’s match against Tottenham Hotspur, Thiago underwent further assessment and a scan on his return to the training centre on Monday.
“Scan results from those assessments have confirmed damage to Thiago’s knee ligaments and he will now work closely with the club’s medical department during his rehabilitation to return to action as soon as possible.”
News of Silva’s injury will be a major blow to head coach Graham Potter, who is under pressure following just two wins from Chelsea’s last 15 games in all competitions.
Since signing for Chelsea in 2020, Silva has been a key player in the heart of their defence. He played a formidable role in helping his side lift the Champions League in 2021, despite going off injured in the final.
Silva has featured in 27 matches for Chelsea this season.
