Xabi Alonso helped Bayer Leverkusen defeat Schalke 4-0

Leverkusen's new Spanish head coach Xabi Alonso reacts from the sidelines during the German first division Bundesliga football match Bayer 04 Leverkusen v Schalke 04 in Leverkusen, western Germany on October 8, 2022.

Xabi Alonso’s first match in charge of Bayer Leverkusen saw his side thrash Schalke 4-0. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich player has immediately lifted his new club out of the relegation zone after replacing Gerardo Seoane earlier this week.

Moussa Diaby scored the first goal of Alonso's tenure halfway through the first half, while Jeremie Frimpong scored the second just before the half-time whistle.

Paulinho added a fourth goal in the second half and extra time after Frimpong doubled his tally. This is only Leverkusen's second win of the season and their biggest Bundesliga victory since January 2022, when they defeated Augsburg 5-1.

Alonso signed a contract with Bayer Leverkusen through June 2024.
