French teen breaks Bayern record in Cup

Ryan Gravenberch (R) of Bayern celebrates with Mathys Tel (L) of Bayern after scoring his team's first goal during the DFB Cup first round match between FC Viktoria Köln and FC Bayern München at RheinEnergieStadion on August 31, 2022 in Cologne, Germany.

Youngsters Ryan Gravenberch and Mathys Tel have scored their first Bayern Munich goals as they cruised 5-0 past third-division Viktoria Cologne in the German Cup.

Former Ajax Amsterdam player Gravenberch, 20, opened the scoring with a low shot in the 35th minute on Wednesday. Tel, who arrived from French club Rennes, got the second on the stroke of halftime with a curling effort into the far right corner.

Statisticians Opta said that at age 17 and 126 days Tel became the youngest Munich scorer in the German Cup since they were promoted to the Bundesliga in 1965.

Ex-Liverpool striker Sadio Mane tapped the third before Jamal Musiala and Leon Goretzka came off the bench to get the final two goals in the first-round game.

Newcomers Gravenberch, Tel and Noussair Mazraoui got their first starts as coach Julian Nagelsmann made seven changes from the team that drew 1-1 with Borussia Moenchengladbach on the weekend. Goretzka and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting returned from knee surgery and the removal of kidney stones, respectively, late in the game.

“I am very happy. It wasn’t so nice to find myself on the operating table. I am happy that the season is starting now for me,” Goretzka told Sky TV.

“We have a very good spirit. Our new lads had a very good game.”

Viktoria stood their ground early on with goalkeeper Ben Voll saving well twice each from Tel and Joshua Kimmich. Simon Handle even scored for the hosts midway through the first half in front of a 50,000 crowd in the home stadium of FC Cologne, but it was ruled offside.
