Roma Plot Summer Move For Saul Niguez

Roma boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly set sights on out-of-favour Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.

As claimed by Calciomercato, the Giallorossi are assessing the possibility of taking the versatile Spaniard away from La Liga in the coming months.

After being one of Diego Simeone’s most trusted allies for years, Saul has tumbled down the pecking order over the past couple of years. He spent last season on loan at Chelsea. But after failing to convince Thomas Tuchel, he returned to the Wanda Metropolitano this summer.

However, he is unlikely to stay in Madrid. Atletico are open to letting the 27-year-old leave the club for another loan. Simeone has already captured the signature of Axel Witsel. That means Saul’s game time in Madrid could suffer a further blow.

Roma are now ready to offer him an escape route from La Liga as Mourinho aims to strengthen his squad. The Special One led the Giallorossi to the Europa Conference League title last term and now wants to capitalise on that.

Having turned the Stadio Olimpico into an attractive destination, Mourinho is confident of landing some big names this summer. Despite his recent downfall, Saul remains a household name in European football.

Saul’s potential arrival would not only bolster the midfielder quality at Roma. It would be a statement of intent, showing Roma can still pull off high-profile deals. The Spaniard would add strength in depth and be an immediate upgrade on Bryan Cristante and Jordan Veretout.
