Arsenal announce signing of Fabio Vieira from Porto

Arsenal Unveil new signing Fabio Vieira at London Colney on June 21, 2022 in St Albans, England.

Arsenal have announced the signing of Porto attacking midfielder Fabio Vieira to Arsenal for a fee potentially rising to €40 million (£34.26 million).

The Athletic reported last Thursday that the 22-year-old was close to signing for Arsenal. Vieira travelled to London to sign a five-year contract that evening.

Porto confirmed the sale on Friday in a statement to the Portuguese stock market.

Vieira made 39 appearances for Porto this season, scoring seven goals and providing 16 assists.

He can also feature as a false nine or central midfielder and has been a regular starter for Portugal Under-21.

Arsenal will pay an initial €35 million (£30 million), with a possible €5 million (£4.26 million) in add-ons.

It is thought that the signing of Vieira was driven by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who has expressed his admiration of the playmaker for months.

Vieira’s signing will be Arsenal’s second incoming of the summer, after confirming the arrival of 19-year-old Brazilian Marquinhos.

Vieira, who had been on holiday in Greece, will join a young nucleus of attacking midfielders including Martin Odegaard and Emile Smith Rowe.
