Late penalty earns Real Sociedad La Liga win

Alexander Isak of Real Sociedad competes for the ball with Adrián Embarba of RCD Espanyol during the LaLiga Santander match between Real Sociedad and RCD Espanyol at Reale Arena on April 04, 2022 in San Sebastian, Spain.

Alexander Isak has converted a penalty six minutes into added time to secure Real Sociedad a 1-0 win over Espanyol in Spain's La Liga.

Isak's low shot from the spot on Monday night at Reale Arena in San Sebastian gave Sociedad their fourth win in their last six matches, and left the Basque Country club closer to securing a European place next season.

Sociedad sit in sixth place with 51 points from 30 matches - two points behind fifth-place Real Betis and six points adrift of Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, who are all tied with 57 points.

Sociedad, who had Socceroos goalkeeper Mathew Ryan on the substitutes bench, had a goal by Alexander Sorloth disallowed for a foul early in the second half.

The hosts earned their late penalty when sub Mikel Merino was fouled inside the area. Swedish striker Isak stepped up and slotted home his fourth goal of the season to inflict a first loss in four matches on Espanyol, who remain in 12th place and 10 points above the relegation zone.

Real Madrid have a 12-point lead at the top of the standings with eight rounds remaining.
