Gladbach move closer to Bundesliga safety

03 April 2022, North Rhine-Westphalia, Mönchengladbach: Soccer: Bundesliga, Borussia Mönchengladbach - FSV Mainz 05, Matchday 28, Stadium im Borussia-Park. Karim Onisiwo (l) of Mainz scores the goal for 1:1.

Borussia Monchengladbach have missed out on a third straight victory with their 1-1 draw against Mainz but even that has moved them another step closer to safety in the Bundesliga.

Breel Embolo opened the scoring for the hosts in the 33rd minute with a low shot at the end of a classy attacking move of one-touch football.

Mainz improved after the break and Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer made a super save from Jonathan Burkardt on the rebound after Leandro Barreiro shot against the post.

Karim Onisiwo eventually netted their deserved equaliser into the far corner in the 73rd.

Gladbach are 12th and with seven points from their last three games eight clear of the danger zone with six matches left. Mainz are four points ahead of them in 10th.

Wolfsburg manager Florian Kohfeldt was only able to watch from home while in COVID-19 quarantine as his team slipped deeper into trouble by losing 3-0 at fellow strugglers Augsburg in Sunday's other game.

Iago gave Augsburg a dream start when he curled the opening goal into far right top corner some 50 seconds into the game.

An artistic effort from Florian Niederlechner in the 62nd and Mads Pedersen's blast into the roof of the net seven minutes later clinched Augsburg's victory.

Augsburg are three points clear of the danger zone, and have a game in hand against Mainz on Wednesday.
