A clinical first half Tottenham offensive outburst against the worst defensive side in the league helped Tottenham secure a vital 4-0 victory.
Spurs 4-0 win was exactly the result they were looking for as they try to climb their way back into contention for a Champions League berth. It was also Tottenham’s first clean sheet in 11 matches.
Matthew Doherty finally scored his first Tottenham goal thanks to lightning-quick break put in motion by an intelligent, pinpoint Harry Winks through ball.
Providing the outlet option, Ryan Sessegnon dashed down the left wing and received the pass in stride. Sessegnon, who’s enjoyed a recent run in the team, cut the ball across the box perfectly for Doherty, who made no mistake with the forceful finish from close range.
Spurs doubled the lead less than six minutes later, when Dejan Kulusevski took matters into his own feet. The Swede made mince meat of a ragged, disorganized Leeds defence and finished smartly with a near-post left footed drive. It was Kulu’s second goal in a week and his second in three Tottenham starts.
Harry Kane then got in on the act with a sublime over-the-shoulder left footed volley from an acute angle. Pierre Hojbjerg had the time and space to take a few touches before finding Kane with the smart assist.
Three goals up before the half an hour mark, a novel feeling for Tottenham supporters. It was a strangely comfortable final 60 minutes, something every Tottenham supporter will be thankful for.
After the interval, and with just minutes to play, the England captain brilliantly played Son Heung-min in for a clinical insurance marker with just minutes to play. Kane enjoyed another excellent all-round performance, his second in a week after a dominant display at the Etihad last weekend.
Spurs rebounded well after a miserable evening in Burnley and took full advantage of Leeds’ porous defence. It was the perfect time to face a forlorn and beleaguered Leeds side, who became the second team in top flight history to concede at least three goals in five successive matches.
With the win, Spurs temporarily move up to seventh place, four points adrift of fourth place Manchester United with a match in hand. Next up for Spurs in the Premier League is a home date against Everton on Monday, March 7.
