Aubameyang, Barcelona continue hot streak

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang of FC Barcelona celebrates 1-0 with Ferran Torres of FC Barcelona, Sergio Busquets of FC Barcelona during the La Liga Santander match between FC Barcelona v Athletic de Bilbao at the Camp Nou on February 27, 2022 in Barcelona Spain.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored his fifth goal in three matches as Barcelona maintained their momentum with a 4-0 thumping of Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.

Ousmane Dembele, Luuk de Jong and Memphis Depay also scored for Barca, who regained fourth place in the Spanish top flight.

The win at Camp Nou moved Barcelona within a point of third-place Real Betis with a game in hand, althougn they trail leaders Real Madrid by 15 points.

Aubameyang was coming off a goal in the Europea League defeat of Napoli on Thursday and a league hat-trick against Valencia.

He scored from close range in the first half and Dembele added to the lead in the second for his first goal since being reinstated to the squad after refusing to leave in the transfer window.

De Jong sealed the victory with a header in the 90th and Depay closed the scoring in stoppage time for his first goal since November.

This was the Dutchman's first appearance after being sidelined for almost a month and a half because of an injury.

Second-placed Sevilla accounted for Real Betis 2-1 in the Seville derby.

It was the rivals' first meeting since the previous derby had to be suspended, and later resumed, because a Sevilla player was hit by an object thrown by a Betis fan during a Cup showdown last month.

Ivan Rakitic and Munir El Haddadi scored first-half goals before Betis replied through with Sergio Canales in stoppage time.

Sevilla are six points behind Madrid and eight points clear of Betis.

We are still alive, Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui said.

We deserved the three points today and now we have to prepare to try to win the next one as well.

Teenage striker Yeremy Pino has became the first Villarreal player to score four times in a league game, and the third youngest to achieve that feat in Spain's top division.

Pino scored a hat-trick before halftime and added another goal in the second half of sixth-placed Villarreal's 5-1 rout of Espanyol.

Seventh-place Real Sociedad defeated Osasuna 1-0 courtesy of a second-half Aritz Elustondo goal.
