Arsenal have been brutally mocked online for their "thanks for everything" tweet after Calum Chambers sealed a permanent switch to Aston Villa.

Chambers, 27, has penned a three-and-half-year contract at Villa Park as new boss Steven Gerrard targets a late push for Europe.

The Villans last featured in the Europa League during the 2010/11 season with caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald overseeing a 4-3 aggregate defeat to Rapid Vienna.

But the Birmingham-based side are targeting a European tour once again and have shown they're not afraid to splash the cash in the winter transfer window.

Villa have already secured deals for flying full-back Lucas Digne and midfield maestro Phillipe Coutinho from Everton and Barcelona respectively.

Chambers becomes their fourth January signing after the Villans also swooped to capture Robin Olsen on loan from AS Roma.

Capped three times at international level, the Petersfield-born centre-back has made just two Premier League appearances for Arsenal this season.

Starting in defeats to both Brentford and Manchester City, the 27-year-old has not featured in the top-flight since shipping five goals at the Etihad Stadium back in August.

A bit-part player for the Gunners since his arrival in 2012, Arsenal announced his departure with a classy message on Thursday evening.

Thanks for everything, @CalumChambers95, read the tweet, accompanied by a clapping hand emoji.

But fans have taken to Twitter to mock Arsenal for the gesture with an FA Cup Chambers' sole honour to show for an eight-year stay at the Emirates.

Chambers has never been anything but an average back up that barely played for us. I say good riddance, tweeted one fan.

Should of let him go years ago instead of stalling his career," said another.

Can't be having squad players lingering around in the shadows for duration of their career, replied a third.

While one cheeky Villa fan quipped: Congratulations to Calum Chambers for moving to a big club!
