Manchester United have confirmed that they are in discussions with the Premier League regarding the feasibility of their clash with Brentford going ahead due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the club.
It has been confirmed that a number of first-team players and staff have tested positive for the virus over the past few days following a series of positive PCR tests.
Their clash at the Brentford Community Stadium on Tuesday evening is now in doubt as a result, with the club having also confirmed that they have had to close their first-team training facility.
An official club statement read: “Manchester United can confirm that following PCR test confirmation of yesterday’s positive LFT Covid-19 cases among the first team staff and players, the decision has been taken to close down first team operations at the Carrington Training Complex for 24 hours, to minimise risk of any further infection.
“Individuals who tested positive are isolating as per Premier League protocols.
“Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the Club is in discussion with the Premier League whether it is safe for Tuesday’s fixture against Brentford to continue, both from a Covid infection and player preparation perspective.
“Team and staff travel to London will be deferred pending the result of that discussion.”
Of course, Manchester United are not the only club to have been hit with a considerable Covid threat recently.
Tottenham Hotspur also had a number of positive tests and had to postpone their Europa Conference League clash against Rennes, as well as their Premier League tie with Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend.
Meanwhile, Leicester City also saw a number of their squad affected by the virus ahead of a Europa League clash with Napoli.
Spurs are set to travel to the King Power Stadium on Thursday evening but with a further case in the squad, it remains to be seen whether that game will go ahead.
