Haaland double in comfortable Dortmund win

Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund is fouled by Jetro Willems of SpVgg Greuther Fuerth during the Bundesliga match between Borussia Dortmund and SpVgg Greuther Fürth at Signal Iduna Park on December 15, 2021 in Dortmund, Germany.

Erling Haaland has scored once in either half to steer Borussia Dortmund to a 3-0 victory over bottom club Greuther Fuerth and cut the gap to leaders Bayern Munich to six points.

The Norwegian striker opened his account in the 33rd minute and later headed home in the 82nd to snare his 53rd league goal in 53 Bundesliga matches.

Dutchman Donyell Malen added a third with a smart finish at the far post in the 89th for his fifth goal in six games in all competitions.

Dortmund are in second place on 34 points, with one game to come before the annual winter break.

Fuerth, who earned their first win of the season last week, kept the hosts at bay for half an hour but went behind when Haaland slotted in a well-struck penalty after a handball.

Haaland made sure of the three points, powering in a header from a Julian Brand free kick eight minutes from the end for his 13th league goal of the campaign before Malen's last-minute goal.

Patrick Schick netted twice to give third-placed Bayer Leverkusen a two-goal cushion against Hoffenheim but the fourth-placed visitors fought back in the last 10 minutes to draw 2-2 with goals from Angelo Stiller and Munas Dabbur.

Last season's runners-up Leipzig remain winless on the road after being held 1-1 at third-last Augsburg, with Daniel Caligiuri converting a late penalty for the hosts after Andre Silva had put Leipzig ahead.

Borussia Moenchengladbach's Bundesliga crisis deepened with a fourth straight defeat, going down 3-2 at home to 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt.

A sixth-minute goal from Florian Neuhaus initially soothed the hosts' nerves but shortly before halftime Rafael Santos Borre equalised.

The game then came to life early in the second half with three goals in five minutes.

Jesper Lindstrom smashed home Frankfurt's second in the 50th, Gladbach levelled for 2-2 in the 54th via a penalty converted by Ramy Bensebaini after Kouadio Kone was fouled, and Frankfurt went ahead for good when Daichi Kamada made the most of a gaping hole in Gladbach's defence.

Frankfurt's Tuta was dismissed for a second bookable offence with 20 minutes left but it mattered little as they held on.

Gladbach languish in 13th just one point above the danger zone while Frankfurt are seventh.

Meanwhile, eighth-placed Union Berlin and fifth-placed Freiburg played out a goalless draw.
