Cavani 'wants to join Barcelona' next summer when Man United contract expires

Edinson Cavani reportedly wants to join Barcelona on a free transfer next summer.

The Manchester United striker is out of contract at the end of the season, having agreed a one-year extension last summer.

Cavani enjoyed a successful first campaign at Old Trafford after leaving Paris Saint-Germain for nothing in 2020.

He netted 17 goals in 39 games, but has struggled to make the same impact with injury problems this season and played just eight times.

The Times report that the 34-year-old still harbours ambitions to play for Barcelona before the end of his career.

Cavani still believes he can play at the top level for another two seasons.

A free transfer would also suit Barcelona, who remain in dire financial circumstances and cannot afford to spend money on players.

Cavani has been a target for Barca for a number of years and he is said to be keen to ply his trade in Spain.

He has played at the top level in Italy, France and England and Spain is next on his list.

The striker did come close to joining Atletico Madrid in 2020, before United came in with a more lucrative offer.

Cavani’s will be hoping to return to action for United soon having not played since the Champions League game against Atalanta on November 2.

He will have new interim manager Ralf Rangnick to impress, who takes charge of the club this weekend.
