Augsburg stuns Bayern Munich to win Bavarian derby 2-1

Mads Pedersen of FC Augsburg celebrates with Niklas Dorsch after scoring their team's first goal during the Bundesliga match between FC Augsburg and FC Bayern München at WWK-Arena on November 19, 2021 in Augsburg, Germany.

Bayern Munich have crashed to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Bavarian neighbours Augsburg which could see their Bundesliga lead cut to one point in the next 24 hours.

Augsburg led 2-0 with goals from Mads Pedersen and Andre Hahn after 35 minutes and all Bayern managed was a 38th-minute effort from Robert Lewandowski in a poor return from the international break.

Bayern remain top despite their second season defeat but Borussia Dortmund can close within one point with victory over lowly Stuttgart on Saturday.

Augsburg moved out of the danger zone past Stuttgart with a third season win which was also only their third victory over Bayern in 21 top-flight duels, the other results being two draws and 16 defeats.

"This is a bitter setback, also in our self-conception of how we play our games," Bayern forward Thomas Mueller told streaming portal DAZN.

"We didn't deserve it because we allowed the goals to happen. We were not clinical enough in the final third. The first half was bad, and we didn't deserve to be lucky in front of goal after the break."

Hahn said: "It feels great, a full house and we beat Bayern, played well. We were too passive and naive in previous games."

Both sides had coronavirus issues, with Augsburg's Ruben Vargas announced shortly before kick-off to have tested positive, just like the Munich duo of Niklas Suele and Josip Stanisic. Munich's Joshua Kimmich was in isolation again after a positive case in his private sphere.

Bayern dominated the early proceedings without threatening before Augsburg became more adventurous and were rewarded for it.

Iago's cross from the left was laid back by Andi Zeqiri for Pedersen to drill into the bottom right corner in the 23rd. Twelve minutes later Zeqiri stole the ball from Kimmich's stand-in Marcel Sabitzer and passed it on to Iago whose cross was headed home by Hahn for 2-0.

Lewandowski volleyed home a deflected cross from Thomas Mueller for his 14th goal of the season to get Bayern back into the game.

Lewandowski fired high early in the second half and Anthony Davies aimed inches wide but Augsburg fought hard and their goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz made a big save in the 80th against Lewandowski to preserve the three points.
