Luke Shaw of Manchester United leaves the match with an injury during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Aston Villa at Old Trafford on September 25, 2021 in Manchester, England.

Luke Shaw has revealed that he could barely train over the last few weeks due to illness and injury.

Shaw enjoyed his best season last campaign, playing a key role for Manchester United as they finished second and reached the Europa League final as well as starting for England in their Euro 2020 final run.

Both United and England lost their respective finals on penalties which took some of the shine off Shaw’s impressive season.

The left back has yet to hit the heights of the previous 12 months and was taken off in the first half against Aston Villa last month, a game United lost 1-0. He returned a week later to complete 90 minutes against Everton.

Shaw is expected to start in Saturday’s game against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium and has said that this is the best he’s felt in a month.

“I’m feeling much better now than I did in the last few weeks,” Shaw told Manchester United’s in-house media.

“To be honest, I hadn’t really trained at all. Leading up to the game against Villa, obviously I was ill and I had to come off then.

“Leading up through the week I didn’t even train to be honest. That was a bit of a struggle because I didn’t feel 100 per cent fit but like I said, whatever the team needs, if they need me I’ll always make myself available.

“With England I didn’t really train much either there to be honest but I managed to get another game in but I’m feeling much better now and hopefully I’m feeling much more fresher than I definitely have in the past month.”

Eagled-eyed fans will have spotted Shaw with his left arm taped up.

The 26-year-old added that the strapping will be gone soon while joking that he won’t need it full-time like Leicester striker Jamie Vardy.

“To be fair I’ve been quite patched up over the last month,” Shaw said.

“Like I said, my whole left side has been patched up but it’s gradually getting better.

“I still need it [the strapping] now but things are obviously getting better so hopefully I'll get rid of it soon. I don’t think I’ll be doing a Jamie Vardy and having to wear it all the time!”
