Romelu Lukaku having scan on thigh injury in Chelsea scare before Aston Villa clash

Romelu Lukaku of Chelsea celebrates after scoring their side's first goal during the Premier League match between Arsenal and Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on August 22, 2021 in London, England.

Romelu Lukaku is set to undergo a scan on his knee before returning to Stamford Bridge early from international duty with Belgium.

Lukaku was on target for Belgium when they squared off with Czechia over the weekend in Brussels, but he also picked up a booking.

The yellow card rules Lukaku out of Belgiums next qualifying clash, away at Belarus, and instead, he will return to Cobham for Chelsea's fixture with Aston Villa.

However, there are doubts that Lukaku may be available for the clash.

The 28-year-old revealed that he has a slight injury concern ahead of his Premier League return.

Lukaku said: "I’ll have a scan of my thigh first [before returning to England], I am struggling with a minor issue for a while. And then I will return to Chelsea."

Not having Lukaku available for the Villa clash would be a huge blow for Thomas Tuchel.

The 28-year-old has impressed since he returned for a second spell at Stamford Bridge.

It took Lukaku just 15 minutes to bag on his return against Arsenal towards the end of September.

Tuchel will be hoping that the knock isn't serious as Chelsea will start their Champions League campaign next Tuesday.

Lukaku made his 100th appearance for Belgium against Czechia, and his goal was his 67th for the Red Devils.

“I think he is a living iconic figure of Belgian football. One hundred caps, 66 goals, at his age." He has a phenomenal attitude, Roberto Martinez said after the clash.

“I hope he can go onto 125 or maybe 150 caps. Sometimes you take for granted what we have. These players don’t come often.”
