Lewandowski streak over as Bayern go clear

24 September 2021, Bavaria, Fürth: Football: Bundesliga, SpVgg Greuther Fürth - Bayern Munich, Matchday 6, Sportpark Ronhof Thomas Sommer. Bayern's Robert Lewandowski (r) and Bayern's Thomas Müller (M) celebrate after scoring the goal to make it 0:3.

Bayern Munich have eased past hosts Greuther Furth 3-1, despite playing almost the entire second half with 10 men and without a goal from their record-seeking marksman Robert Lewandowski as they opened a three-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga.

Lewandowski saw his scoring streak snap after 15 consecutive games in Friday's contest, thus ensuring that the Pole failed to equal Gerd Muller's all-time record of netting in 16 straight league games.

It was also the end of his club-record scoring streak in all competitions. Lewandowski had scored in 19 consecutive games, including matches in the league, cup and Champions League going back to a 3-3 draw with Arminia Bielefeld on February 15.

It was always going to be a one-sided encounter against the promoted club, who are bottom in the Bundesliga and without a win this season, and Bayern took a quick lead after 10 minutes with Thomas Muller slotting in from an Alphonso Davies cutback. IMG-20210924-221558-971

Joshua Kimmich was devastatingly accurate with a low drive on the half-hour to score his third league goal, after netting twice last week, and Lewandowski hit the woodwork just before the break.

A reckless challenge by Benjamin Pavard three minutes after the restart left the champions with 10 men after he was shown red but it hardly changed the dynamic of the game.

A 68th minute own goal by Sebastian Griesbeck, under pressure from Lewandowski, killed off any slim hopes of a comeback that Furth may have been secretly harbouring.

The home fans did get a moment to savour when Cedric Itten headed in a cross in the 87th minute to cut the deficit.

Bayern, who take on Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League next week, move up to 16 points from six matches, with VfL Wolfsburg, on 13 in second place, travelling to Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Third-placed Borussia Dortmund, on 12, take on Borussia Monchengladbach.
