AC Milan handed double injury boost ahead of Liverpool Champions League fixture

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (L) and Franck Kessie of AC Milan attend the Serie A football match between AC Milan and Cagliari Calcio. AC Milan won 4-1 over Cagliari Calcio.

AC Milan have received a double injury boost ahead of next week’s Champions League clash with Liverpool.

The Reds kick-off their European campaign against the Italian giants at Anfield next Wednesday.

A 2-0 win against Crystal Palace on the final day of last season saw Jurgen Klopp’s side secure third and Champions League football for this season.

At one stage, that appeared extremely unlikely for the Reds, but a fine sequence of results, accompanied by Leicester City's downturn in form, saw the tide change.

The Reds will now start their campaign at home to AC next week before travelling to Portugal to take on FC Porto on Tuesday, September 28.

And the Rossoneri are expected to welcome back both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Franck Kessie for the game at Anfield.

That is because according to reports in Italy, the pair are both in contention to feature in AC’s Serie A clash with Lazio at the San Siro on Sunday.

Kessie picked up a muscle injury after returning to training with his club last month after featuring at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for the Ivory Coast.

While Ibrahimovic has been out of action since May with a knee injury and was forced to miss Euro 2020 as a result.

Stefano Pioli’s side currently sit joint-top of Serie A having won both of their opening two league games of the season.

Speaking on the draw, Reds boss Klopp said : "I laughed, to be honest, pretty loud because it is a tough group obviously.

"It's Champions League, so that's how it is, and you have to play the best teams in Europe, and obviously some of them are in our group!

"We played, I don't know how often, already against Porto, so they will be waiting for us. We have obviously a little bit of [an] open bill with Atletico, and AC Milan, a historical one obviously. So, I think our supporters should be looking forward to it – we do, for sure.

"I know that people sit always at home and think, 'Ah come on, that would be cool, then you have this team together and the worst of pot four and the worst of pot one' and all this kind of stuff.

"So, we didn't get that obviously but we're still pretty ambitious and would like to show the really hard work from last year, qualifying for the Champions League, that it was worth it. That's how we will play the games."
