Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus was sent off for an appalling head-high tackle during Brazil's narrow 1-0 win over Chile in the Copa America quarter-finals on Saturday.
A 46th minute goal from Lucas Paqueta was enough for the Selcecao to book their place in the last-four of the competition, where they will face Peru in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.
But just minutes after Paqueta's strike Jesus was given his marching orders with a straight red card after a moment of utter madness, leaving his team having to play the vast majority of the second-half with ten men.
The 24-year-old challenged Chile defender Eugenio Mena for a 50-50 ball, but while the former went in with his head Jesus led with his foot, and was wildly out of control as he kung-fu kicked Mena in the face.
Jesus could have no complaints with the decision, and he will now be banned for his country's crucial semi-final fixture next week.
Speaking after the game he did apologise for the horrific tackle, and took to Twitter to post: “Unfortunately I made a mistake in which the team could have suffered, but this group once again showed strength.
“I apologise to my teammates and I will always continue to try to learn from my mistakes. I'm relieved to hear that Mena is fine and we've already talked about it.
On Instagram Jesus added a picture of himself walking off the pitch along with the caption: "Nothing lasts forever, neither pains nor joys. Everything in life is learning. Everything in life surpasses itself."
The Copa America quarter-finals continue on Sunday as Uruguay take on Colombia and Argentina face Ecuador.
Meanwhile there has been some talk recently that City could sacrifice Jesus in a swap deal with Tottenham as they look to pry England striker Harry Kane away from the North Londoners.
City have serious interest in making a move for the Three Lions captain during the transfer window after he expressed his desire to leave Spurs in pursuit of a new challenge to compete for silverware.
But Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has no intention to sell his prized asset with claims City will be required to up their £100m offer that has been reported.
To sweeten the deal, City have offered either Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte, Bernardo Silva and Jesus as a makeweight in a potential part-exchange for Kane.
