Chelsea left back Emerson on Napoli’s radar — report

Chelsea's Emerson Palmieri gestures after Arsenal's Hector Bellerin scores his side's second goal during the Premier League match between Chelsea FC and Arsenal FC at Stamford Bridge on January 21, 2020 in London, United Kingdom.

Emerson may have gotten an official shirt number for 2020-21, the No.33 as before, but as we saw in the case of Michy Batshuayi, that doesn’t guarantee an actual place in the squad for the season that’s about to start in a couple days.

In fact, it would be surprising if Emerson stayed, especially considering that he’s now just third-choice for the position after the arrival of (currently injured) Ben Chilwell, and fourth if we also consider the versatile Cesar Azpilicueta.

But Chelsea also don’t want to let him go just for peanuts, as the rejection of Inter Milan’s loan bid yesterday shows. While Inter are said to remain interested, we could have other, better options incoming as well. According to Sky Italia, Napoli could be one such option.

That option is unfortunately rather tenuous at the moment. Napoli have reportedly made “first contact”, but are also only looking for a loan, and only if they are successful in selling Faouzi Ghoulam first, who had been linked with Chelsea pre-Chilwell as well.

But at least they’re an option, which could help motivate discussion with Inter or whoever, if nothing else.
