Per a new report from Sky Sport Germany, Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he’s optimistic that David Alaba will sign a contract extension with the club.
Earlier in the season, Hansi Flick conferred the epithet of “defensive chief” on the Austrian defender, who has been one of Bayern’s most consistent performers en route to another historic treble-winning season.
Negotiations between Alaba, his agent Pini Zahavi, and Bayern have proven to be more difficult than Bayern may have anticipated, but Rummenigge is confident everything will work out: “I can’t imagine by any stretch of the imagination that David wants to leave FC Bayern,” he said.
Rummenigge said that Alaba was “really relaxed, content, happy, as I have seldom seen a person” at the club’s Champions League celebrations. Rummenigge continued, “we have great interest in his staying, and I think he feels good at FC Bayern, too.”
“You always wanted to have a club to win the Champions League — now you have it! So think that over carefully,” Rummenigge says he whispered in the Austrian’s ear during the party on Monday night. His impression after that exchange with him was that “I think and hope that he stays,” he said.
While there’s still nothing concrete, the overall mood about Alaba seems positive. Flick has justifiably said that his has not set a date for the celebrations to simmer down, so it’s likely that it still might be another week or so before Alaba makes his decision.
