Manchester United join race to sign Roma star Riccardo Calafiori

Riccardo Calafiori of AS Roma is challenged by Tibo Persyn of FC Internazionale during the Primavera 1 match between FC Internazionale U19 and AS Roma U19 at on November 1, 2019 in Milan, Italy.

Manchester United have entered the race to sign rising Roma star Riccardo Calafiori.

The Red Devils have watched the 18-year-old left back playing for Roma’s youth team several times this season.

And the Old Trafford giants have now sounded out his agent Mino Raiola about a possible transfer.

Calafiori, who is under contract with Roma until 2022, is already wanted by Paris Saint-Germain.

And he has been offered a bumper new contract in a bid to convince him to stay, with Roma keen to bring him into the first-team squad next season.

Technical staff at the club also believe that while the Italy Under 19 international is a top prospect, it’s too early for him to move abroad.

But it is understood Roma would be willing sellers at the right price and are hoping to encourage an auction.

Calafiori has four goals and two assists in 13 games with the youth team this season and has impressed United with his performances.

Meanwhile, Odion Ighalo is willing to risk a new £75m contract with Shanghai Shenhua to remain with the Red Devils for the rest of the season.

Ighalo joined United on a short-term loan in January and has proved a huge success after scoring four times in eight appearances.

His deal expires this weekend and he is wanted back in China, where Shenhua are gearing up for the start of the new season next month, after the start date in March was put back due to Covid-19.

But Ighalo remains desperate to see out the Premier League campaign with United, who are keen to retain his services so he can provide attacking cover for Marcus Rashford.

Talks between both clubs are ongoing and Ighalo has made a personal plea to Shenhua bosses to allow him to stay with United.
