Tottenham Target Loan Move For Atletico Madrid Midfielder Thomas Lemar

Thomas Lemar of Atletico de Madrid looks on during the Liga match between Real Betis Balompie and Club Atletico de Madrid at Estadio Benito Villamarin.

Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Lemar in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The 24-year-old moved to Spain from Monaco in 2018 but has failed to replicate the heights he reached in helping the French team win the Ligue 1 title a year earlier.

A World Cup winner with France, Lemar was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal and Liverpool before deciding to join Atletico for a reported €60m (£51m).

After featuring in 31 games in his first season at the Wanda Metropolitano, the forward has been used more sparingly so far this season, playing in only 13 league games.

And according to Foot Mercato , Spurs are interested in bringing him to the Premier League in January.

The report suggests though that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy would prefer not to fork out big money for the Frenchman and is initially eyeing a loan deal.

Lemar is thought to be open to the idea of moving to Spurs to team up with Jose Mourinho and Atletico are ready to let him leave if the right offer comes in.

Spurs may have to fight bitter rivals Arsenal for the playmaker, however, with the Gunners said to be interested too.

A loan move would at least give Spurs the chance to see Lemar in action in the Premier League, and they would no doubt love to beat Arsenal to his signature.

There is no doubting Lemar’s talents and the only question would be if he would be able to cut it in England.

He has made 24 appearances for his country, scoring four goals, and made his only appearance of the 2018 World Cup in Russia in France’s final group game against Denmark.

Lemar is a versatile midfielder able to play on both wings as well as through the centre and in a free role.

He is predominantly left footed, but is also competent with his right foot, and is a good dribbler.

New Spurs boss Mourinho is on the lookout for new signings in the current transfer window but it is not clear how much he has to spend.

Under the Portuguese the team has looked shaky at the back so far and defensive targets may be his priority in the coming days.
