Borussia Monchengladbach lost 2-0 at Schalke on Friday night, missing the chance to return to the top of the table in the German Bundesliga restart.

New signing Michael Gregoritsch set up Suat Serdar's opener in the 48th minute with a curling low shot, and then grabbed the second himself 10 minutes later.

Gregoritsch told broadcasters ZDF: "It was great to have this debut and the win was special. The team has a lot of quality, we are high up. It is a nice situation, we want to keep the momentum and want to stay close to the top."

Gladbach remain second after the defeat, two points behind leaders RB Leipzig.

"We had other ideas about this match but we didn't find any solutions in their half. We need to create more chances in the upcoming matches," Gladbach's Jonas Hofmann told streaming network DAZN.

Schalke continued their impressive season by rising above arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund into fourth, and tied with title holders Bayern Munich.

On Saturday,Leipzig play Union Berlin and Dortmund are in Augsburg, while Bayern visit Hertha Berlin on Sunday in the restart from the four-week northern winter break.
