Match Preview: Liverpool vs Newcastle United

Liverpool will be aiming to pick up where they left off before the international break against Newcastle United at Anfield this weekend, and the Premier League title contenders are huge favourites to extend their perfect start to the new season.

The Merseysiders have come out swinging in 2019/20, winning each of their first four Premier League matches of the new campaign, racking up an aggregate score of 12-3 in the process.

Jurgen Klopp’s European champions have been setting new club records too, and Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Burnley in their last outing was a history-making 13th Premier League victory on the spin.

Liverpool’s incredible winning streak isn’t the only positive statistic the Reds bring into Saturday’s early kick-off however.

Klopp’s charges are unbeaten in their last 40 Premier League matches on their own patch, and Liverpool haven’t lost at home to Newcastle in their last 23 league meetings with them at the same venue – fortress Anfield indeed.

But while everything points to another Liverpool win this weekend, there is a good chance that we won’t see the usual avalanche of goals from the red-hot Reds.

With one win, one draw and two defeats from their opening quartet of Premier League fixtures, Newcastle’s form is more miss than hit, though Steve Bruce will find some encouragement in his team’s defensive displays.

The Magpies conceded one or fewer goals in three of their league matches to date in 2019/20, and in four of their five competitive games overall since the summer.
