Fritz Keller, President of SC Freiburg, has been elected to be the new president of the DFB. Kelle succeeds Reinhard Grindel, who stepped down from the post in April after a scandal-ridden term marred by the sporting failure in Russia, controversy over race, and corruption.
Keller was officially elected for a three-year term by result of a unanimous, unopposed decision by a group of voting delegates at the DFB headquarter in Frankfurt.
Bayern Munich club president Uli Hoeness and CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge congratulated the 62-year-old on his accomplishment.
Both Hoeness and Rummenigge are fond of Keller and feel he’s the right man to lead the DFB to a better place in the future.
Hoeness stated in a release at FCBayern.com,
“I congratulate Fritz Keller for the unanimous result. I am convinced that Fritz Keller as DFB President is the right choice.
“I will always gladly support him”.
Rummenigge likewise expressed his congratulations:
“I would like to congratulate Fritz Keller and the DFB for this election on behalf of FC Bayern. In my eyes, Fritz Keller is the perfect person for the office of DFB president.
“He has proven his abilities for years as the chairman and president of SC Freiburg and as a successful businessman. He moreover is an outstanding personality.
“I wish him much success and look forward very much to collaborating with him".
Keller was recommended for the position as recently as August, which makes it all the more refreshing that he was elected by a unanimous decision. It’s clear that there is a real consensus that he’s the right man for the job.
Keller recently described himself as a “people person” and set forth his vision for the DFB moving forward (via DW):
“I am very happy about the clear vote and the great confidence that the delegates have entrusted me with. Those who have elected me have voted for change.
“It is important to me that we lead the DFB into a successful future, with new structures, efficiency and transparency. This won’t be a one-man-show.
Further developing German football from the grassroots to the top, can only be achieved through teamwork”.
