CONFIRMED: Former Everton Captain goes back home

After a dozen years with Everton, captain Phil Jagielka left the club this summer and will be returning to where it all started for him, for one more year.

The soon-to-be 37-year-old has signed a one-year deal with his boyhood club Sheffield United as they make their return to the Premier League.

While the central defender has lost a step or three over the years, he will provide valuable veteran savvy, leadership and experience to a side that will be fighting against the odds to remain in the top flight after having clawed their way back.

Jagielka made 385 appearances for the Toffees, scoring 19 times and picking up 11 assists as well. Of the twelve years at Everton, he served as captain for half of those.

The veteran was linked with a move back to the Blades back in the summer of 2017 as well, but he stuck it out with the Blues until the end of his contract this year.

Speaking to the Sheffield United website, Jagielka was naturally thrilled to be back.

“It just feels right, I was hoping for the phone call to come but you’re not sure when it’s going to come.

”The deal was done in a matter of minutes rather than days. I’m delighted to be here and can’t wait to get started.”

He will join the squad as they jet out to Portugal for their preseason preparation. Blues can be happy that they’ll get to see Jags for one more season, even though he’s not likely to play much and will be odd seeing him in red and white stripes.
