Leah Galton, Ella Toone, Katie Zelem and Millie Turner of Manchester United celebrate with the FA Cup trophy after winning the Adobe Women's FA Cup Final match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium on May 12, 2024 in London, England.

Manchester United Women captain Katie Zelem will leave the club after 6 years. This news was confirmed by the club via social media announcement on Thursday. Zelem became captain after the departure of Alex Greenwood and was one of the first names on the teamsheet each week under both Casey Stoney and Marc Skinner.

This announcement follows a Wednesday announcement that Lucia Garcia would also leave at the end of the month when her contract expires.

Zelem made 161 appearances for United after joining from Juventus in 2018 and immediately became a core member of the group because of her passing and set-piece expertise. She famously scored three Olimpico goals in two successive games in 2022, firing past Manchester City and Leicester City directly on corner kicks.

Garcia joined United from Athletic Bilbao in 2022 and made 60 appearances with 16 goals to her name in all competitions across two seasons with the Reds. Her abilities as a wide forward with an eye for forward runs and goalscoring made her a valuable member of a talented group of attackers. Her efforts culminated in a Player of the Match performance in the 2024 Women’s FA Cup Final, in which she scored twice in a 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur to help United win the competition for the first time in club history.

The pair of first-teamers join Mary Earps on a growing list of key players leaving United as free agents, a trend that has continued over the past couple of seasons.
