Fabrizio Romano details injury update on Edson Alvarez after West Ham star blow

West Ham are awaiting test results after Mexico star Edson Alvarez was ruled out of Copa America with a hamstring injury, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian transfer specialist reported via his personal X account on Monday (24 June) that the staff at the London Stadium are not expecting a big injury after the midfielder was substituted during a 1-0 defeat to Jamaica on Sunday 23 June.

The 26-year-old was “visibly distraught” after falling to the floor in agony, as per Premier Sports, but it seems the injury is not expected to be as serious as first thought.

West Ham United suffer Edson Alvarez scare on international duty

Hammers fans will have been covering their eyes after news of Alvarez’s injury emerged on Sunday night, having only completed 30 minutes of football before being substituted.

Of course, with plenty of the summer left before pre-season starts at the London Stadium, Julen Lopetegui will not be too concerned about the injury unless tests done by the Hammers suggest anything else.

The injury scare may also fend off any transfer interest this summer, with Manchester United said to be eyeing a move for the player as a replacement for Casemiro [Fabrizio Romano].

The Mexican was one of the most important players under David Moyes last season, creating the base of the team’s spine in midfield, acting as a block ahead of the defence and launching counterattacks.

Having only arrived at the club from Ajax last summer, the Hammers will be keen to keep the international midfielder within their ranks as Lopetegui looks to rebuild the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Mexican is likely to be a key part of the new manager’s plans moving forward, with few players currently at the London Stadium who are capable of doing the same job.
