Liverpool survived a second half onslaught from Tottenham to win 2-1 and end their two-game losing streak in the Premier League.
Mohamed Salah’s brilliant first half double against Spurs proved to be the difference as the Reds leapfrogged above Fulham into eighth spot.
Salah broke the deadlock in the 11th minute with a fiercely struck volley into the bottom corner after being picked out by Darwin Nunez.
And he then doubled the visitors’ lead just before the break as he capitalised on Eric Dier’s poor header where he chipped the onrushing Hugo Lloris.
It looked as though Jurgen Klopp’s men would cruise to an easy victory in the second half in what was another poor display from Spurs as fans booed the players off the pitch.
But they fought back in the second period, with Dier having an effort saved by Alisson before Ivan Perisic hit the bar from close range.
And they got their reward in the 70th minute when Harry Kane fired an attempt into the bottom left corner after being played in by Dejan Kulusevski.
The Swedish winger, who had missed the last ten matches through injury, had only come off the bench a minute prior.
The hosts pressed in search of an equaliser, but were unable to beat Alisson for a second time.
They thought they had got it in the 89th minute when Kane flicked on a header towards the back post.
But Rodrigo Bentancur was unable to get the decisive touch as Liverpool held on for the crucial three points in what was their first away win of the Premier League campaign.
It means that Liverpool are up into eighth – seven points off Tottenham in fourth.
Spurs started the day in third, but have dropped down a place after Newcastle thumped Southampton 4-1 at St Mary’s.
Antonio Conte’s side have now lost three out of their last four top-flight matches.
Next up for Liverpool is a home clash against the Saints, while Spurs welcome Leeds to north London in their last fixture before the World Cup.
Former Crystal Palace midfielder Darren Ambrose said on talkSPORT: “This is why the Spurs fans were booing at half time because this second half is how they can play.
“But Liverpool look like they can score every time they go forward.”
